Planning a smart home or business technology project

Good technology projects start with a plan, not a product list. Before choosing devices, it helps to think about how you use the space and what you want it to do.

Start with the rooms and routines

Walk through a normal day. Which lights do you touch most? Where does music or TV matter? Where do you want to see who is at the door? Those everyday moments are what a good system should make easier.

Plan the network first

Automation, cameras, AV and alarms all depend on a reliable network. Getting the cabling and WiFi right early keeps the rest of the system stable.

Wire early where you can

If walls are open during a build or renovation, it is the cleanest time to plan wiring, keypad locations, speakers and equipment space. Finished homes can still be upgraded with a careful mix of wireless devices and clean retrofit routes.
